The maintenance and management costs of legacy routers, and the business opportunity loss from not quickly deploying new services was significant.   Standardizing on a true edge platform, rather than just a low end router with limited capabilities was critical to gain efficiencies and meet the demands of the business.

The Bank had a need to support services with unroutable, legacy protocols and needed a platform to support Data-Link Switching (DLSw).   Additionally, the Bank needed to deploy new revenue generating services including a Video Concierge service to allow customers in branches to access remote experts, when local experts are not available. Enter the Cisco 1921 Integrated Services Router (ISR).

The Cisco 1921 handled the DLSw requirement with ease, and supported the demands of Voice and Video prioritization, in addition to high availability, high speed routing.   These capabilities allowed the Bank to leverage existing investments, and deploy new services saving expense, and adding new revenue streams.

The Bank was reliant on redundant wireline MPLS connectivity. Though reliable, the approach was relatively expensive and included some risk as both connections were subject to terrestrial disruption such as fiber cuts. The elimination of one of the MPLS circuits, and the addition of lower cost Verizon Wireless LTE services decreased service outage risk and decreased expense yielding better continuity, at a lower cost.
